Book review

When workers or class of employees is mainly composed of slaves, the social chasm between the property owners and have-nots widens. Wealth (euporia) and poverty (aporia) in the IV. means the presence or absence of capital (ousia), rather than getting high or low earnings. Owner even the smallest capital looked down on the citizen to earn a living in any plebeian occupation (banausia). For capital provides recreation, and leisure, in Aristotle's words, "necessary for self-improvement and participation in politics." Those who have no capital, in order and there is no entertainment. Such people have to work to live, like a skilled servant, and make the working class (chernetikon). Plato and Aristotle in their ideal state of all citizens raised above this level, giving them two species of capital - land and slaves. The Athenians tried to grant land as cleruchy those at home did not have enough capital. After the failure of cleruchy Democratic leaders began to pay the salary to the poor citizens of the state. Aristotle criticized this method because of the state salary is not enough to lift the poor above the level of the proletariat. Instead, the "excess returns should give to the poor (aporoi) large sums of money so they could buy land or obtain capital (aphorme) for trade or agriculture ... and so they can achieve long-term prosperity (euporia)
